Deployment Health Surveillance Course – Level 1

Target Audience:

This course is applicable to all NATO personnel in medical treatment facility (MTF) role 1, 2 or 3 or deployed in medical staff or CBRN Defence related functions at NATO or in national Ministry of Defense agencies and headquarters. To be eligible to attend this course the nominee should be military officers (OF 2 – OF5) or civilian equivalent or Senior NCO who are:

(a) MTF role 1, 2, 3 and CJMED staff

(b) CBRN Defence staff within any of the NATO HQs (at all levels of command)

(c) CBRN Defence staff within NATO nations involved in national planning



• Language proficiency: English according to STANAG 6001 (listening/speaking/reading/writing)

• Computer skills: be familiar with common presentation and word processing software

Instructional Components:

• Day 1: Administrative issues; Initial evaluation of students; Health surveillance; EpiNATO-2/DHSC; Exercise EpiNATO-2; Analysis level and feed-back/DHSC

• Day 2: Real time epidemiological surveillance; ASTER/NATO systems; Exercise ASTER; Analysis level and feed-back ASTER/NATO systems

• Day 3: Outbreak investigation/forensic; Simulator presentation; Exercise Simulator Group 1/Short Case study Group 2; Long Case study Group 3 and 4 – Part 1; Exercise Simulator Group 2 / Short Case study Group 1; Long Case study Group 3 and 4 – Part 2

• Day 4: Exercise Simulator Group 3 / Short Case study  Group 4; Long Case study Group 1 and 2 – Part 1; Exercise Simulator Group 4 / Short Case study Group 3; Long Case study Group 1 and 2 – Part 2; Presentation of simulation results by the 4 groups; Group syndicate discussion; Course final evaluation  

Learning Objectives:

LO 1 understand the general concept of health surveillance

LO 2 use the EpiNATO-2 system in MTF Role 1

LO 3 use the ASTER and further implemented systems like MEDICS in MTF Role 1

LO 4 understand and use the feedback provided by the DHSC level
